Scott’s Shots has confirmed the imminent departure of Green Boxer, Michael Smith effective the end of this month. Smith will be a multi-tool player for ESPN (and former Globe boss, Don Skwar) on, at the very least, TV and the web. Smith, who two weeks ago told Scott’s Shots he was planning for another season of Pats coverage for the Globe, told us with a smile yesterday, “Some things done changed.”
Indeed, they did.
We’ll have more on Smith’s move, which he said “Kind of came out of the blue,” and what his role will be for the Worldwide Leader in Friday’s regularly scheduled Scott’s Shots.
For now, let’s give Joe Sullivan the beneficial benefit of our job-hiring counseling services. (Remember Sully, however, that one of my first hires at SPORT magazine during the title’s Final Death years, was a blonde intern who didn’t know the Red Sox from her running socks. But boy could she type. Anyway. . . )
In rapid fashion, the Globe’s Sports Desk has seen its two most promising writers abandon ship with Smith now following his “Sports Xtra (and more sadly, I, Max’s) buddy, Michael Holley. If this keeps up, the Green Boxers will have more sports staff bodies in Athens than it does within 30 miles of Morrissey Boulevard.
This time, the departure and desk change happens to involve what could easily be the most desirable beat in Boston. (To wit, the Pats are Team Harmony, the access and the facilities are great and personalities and stories are endless; and if all that doesn’t convince you, the team to be covered has won two of the past three Super Bowls and currently is run by the next, “next incarnation of Lombardi.” If you think the Red Sox beat is better than that, I’d urge you to try it for a month.
