Just a few print/web follow-ups to the Sheff Charade:

• Nice work by the Herald and Michael Silverman in id’ing the alleged Sheff Shover, Chris House of Dorchester and getting quote form his fiancee. The story had an update of 6:37 a.m. on the web site, which we guess means that the Herald realizes – unlike the Globe – that they are a news organization with the ability to update stories at any times they wish, especially when a story is as “fluid” as this one.
Boston.com once again proved its overall lameness with the same outdated stories from the print edition, lingering on the website as of 11 a.m.
And no offense to Basketball Bob Ryan, but unless Steve Buckley’s deadline was a whole heck of a lot later than the Globe’s, what’s the explanation for me having to read about “the season’s schedule” instead of “the Sheffield?”
Not to beat a dead horse (my speciality), but something’s gotta change in the newspaper world or the readership declines you’re hearing about now will be fractional to those you hear about in two years time.
It takes but one trip to www.nypost.com to see how this story should have been handled by the locals. Not only does NYC’s best columnist, Mike Vaccaro address the issue, he absolutely nails it and likely wrote it in, oh 20 minutes or so. His teammates, including our guy Michael Morrissey, circled the wagons immediately and dove into the mess full force. To better their product. To drive traffic to the web. To do their job.
Likewise, the Daily News ran with the story and gave us: “IDIOTS!” on the back page. The Post went with “Mass Hysteria” (edge: News).
• Maybe Shots’ consultant (and jewelry designer) Michael Gee can chime in with his definition of “deadline” and how that “deadline” may have affected his ability to do his job?
• A quick check down south at one of Miami’s all sports talk radio stations (790 AM) indicates the Sox-Yanks is filling about 50 percent of the on-air and phone call time. So much for my theory the nation is getting sick of Sox Nation.
• We’ll get more time to digest the happenings on a day with The Baze, so check back over the weekend for further Sheff Stuff.
