Eddie Andelman’s scheduled 2-4 slot at WWZN 1510 AM was being filled with national programming (Bob Stelton) from Sporting News Radio today and SNR programming will dominate the 1510 AM programming line-up for the foreseeable future.
As expected, a morning meeting with executives from SNR resulted in the termination of The Zone’s two, major, local-origination programs: Andelman and “The Diehards’” afternoon drive spot.
It is still unclear if SNR will remain in the Boston market, or, as has been indicated to Shots, they will shutter the entire operation come January 1.
One former Zone staffer who was part of this morning’s meeting said the remaining staff at the Burlington offices will now consist of Anthony Pepe, Jon Anik and Brad Parsons. Pepe (Director of Marketing) and Anik (Business Manager) were also two-thirds of “The Diehards” (along with Ryen Russillo). Parsons is the station’s engineer.
In an odd bit of arbitrary website updating, www.1510thezone.com, has already removed the remainder of the staff’s contact information, yet still had the “On Air Now” logo linked to “The Eddie Andelman Show.” The Lynnfield Loudmouth was most certainly NOT on the air - as women’s golf talk (!!!) dominated the Stelton show.
The only other contact person’s information that remains from yesterday’s full line-up of about a dozen Zone staff names is the station’s webmaster, Mike Goldstein, of Animal 57 Productions. (Goldstein, a UMass grad, is listed as Animal 57’s CEO, indicating his company is likely used by the station on a contract basis.)
The former staffer, who preferred Shots not identify him, did indicate that local, bought-time, programming will continue at 1510 and includes the debut of James Murphy’s “Just Hockey” show on Saturday, as well as other local buys like “Weekend Thunder,” “Celtics Pride” and the “Larry Lee Lewis Comedy Hour.”
The mood during the 11 a.m. meeting, according to the former staffer, was one of sadness mixed with pride at the accomplishments the station had made in four years in the market.
“Everyone was so classy,” said the source. “There were no tears, probably because we knew something was coming.”
Multiple phone calls to Sporting News Radio headquarters in Techny, Ill. were not returned to Scott’s Shots. Nor was a follow-up call that was placed to Vulcan spokesperon Michael Nank. Vulcan is the parent company of SNR (and WWZN) and is overseen by Microsoft co-founder, Paul G. Allen.
