SHERIFF SULLY RESPONDED:

A few quick thoughts before the press conference:

* I love how Globe writers haven’t been allowed on WEEI for more than five years because the radio station’s standards are up to the Globe’s level, but it was all of a sudden OK for Shaughnessy to appear on D&C this morning. I mean, talk about looking weak. Either lift the ban or don’t, but how can one justify this. Oh, we needed a large audience for Shaughnessy to attempt and earn some credibility back? Please.

* This press conference is going to be a whole lot of PR spin. Outside of Theo, everyone’s in the same row boat here, from NESN, WEEI, the Sox and the Globe and they need this to play well so the media cycle plays itself out. Not sure why Theo agreed to this, except that he’s interested in the Dodgers’ GM gig and he wants all to see him being the bigger man and all that.

* You know, more sports’ department employees than not are enjoying the hell out of seeing Shaughnessy squirm the last few days. He’s not a popular guy, which I’m sure doesn’t stun anyone. Strangely, Bon Ryan is among his closest confidents, although Ryan has major issues with Shaughnessy drawing the front page for major events like the World Series and the Super Bowl.

* It’s been four days but I still can’t get past one item in Shaughnessy’s column Sunday. Who gives a flying fart that Larry Lucchino was a better high school baseball player than Epstein? What does that have to do with baseball knowledge? Just a bizarre point. For the record, Epstein was mostly a backup at Brookline High School. We actually played in the same conference, the Bay State League, but I only played two years of varsity baseball and Epstein graduated two years before me so there’s no stories of us playing one another.
