Slightly less intriguing and involving entirely less wads of cash than the “Dice-K Watch,” the Red Sox Radio Team is also set to be decided upon this week, according to the team’s Executive VP/Public Affairs, Dr. Charles Steinberg.
“I’m awaiting word from (Chief Operating Officer) Mike Dee, who expects that we should have clarity this week,” said Steinberg in an email response to Shots.
It is believed that Joe Castiglione has already been retained by the club, leaving the replacement for Jerry Trupiano still to be determined. A little over a month ago, the Boston Herald’s Track Gals “reported” that Steve “Psycho” Lyons had been contacted by the club and was considered a strong candidate to team with Castilglione as a “Stick and Psycho” combo.
The report was never confirmed, but the fact that Lyons’s name was the only one “leaked” leads us to believe that once the lightning rod, “Psycho,” passed that initial test balloon without too much backlash, the Sox figure he’d be a safe bet.
Shots has also been told by separate sources that there could very well be two people named to replace Troop – especially if someone like Lyons, with scheduling conflicts, is brought on board.
The interesting thing in all of this is that the supposed “Chosen One,” Sox Vice President/Communications Glenn Geffner, may not end up in the new, WRKO 680 AM booth at all. It’s quite possible Geffner priced himself out of a job the Sox were grooming him for all of last season (with minor league, NESN opportunities).
And let’s not forget that pesky rumor of Entercom (or specifically WEEI 850 AM) bringing on a full-time Red Sox reporter to help offset the move of the majority of the schedule to sister station 680 AM. If that plan is still in the works – and we have reason to believe it is – the reporter position could also be part of the new radio team with possible pre- and post- game contributions on 680, in addition to regular work for 850.
The final decision for the broadcast team is a joint one made between Entercom and the Red Sox, per the supposed $15 million per year rights deal announced in May.
. . .As always, there’s a Yankees corollary to all this and it is reported here by the outstanding Andrew Marchand of the New York Post. It appears the Sox squeezed a bit more out of Entercom than the Yanks could out of WCBS.
. . . We’re just thinking out loud here, but wouldn’t it be kind of cool to incorporate “Son of Joe,” Duke Castiglione, into the radio mix? He’s a national-level talent and the mystique of a father-son duo would be a natural for the nostalgic Sox marketing department.
. . . Can you imagine getting Psycho and Dice-K in the same week? It’d be the proudest week in Sox history since 2004.
. . . Yes, we’re cheering for the possibility of having Psycho on the local airwaves - it’ll be car-crash radio just waiting to happen. He’ll be suspended by the club for inappropriate remarks by the All-Star break!
. . .Shots will stay on top of the story and we’ll hope to have further updates throughout the week, or, at the very least, at Friday’s regularly scheduled Shots.
