FORT MYERS, Fla. - A fairly quiet morning here at Camp Dice-K and the open access clubhouse period didn’t result in anyone gathering big media crowds. Some of the players who were talking to the media, mostly in one-on-one situations, were Dustin Pedroia, Mike Timlin, Jason Varitek and Alex Cora.
Manager Terry Francona, after telling Shots he felt “great” yesterday morning, is again absent today with further Francona Flu-like symptoms. Meeting the media post-practice in place of Francona will be coaches Brad Mills and John Farrell.
. . . Entering the clubhouse, Dice-K was once again wearing the pink Izod that he arrived in Tampa sporting. The guy pulls off pink fairly well.
. . . Curt Schilling mistakenly id’d (from afar) a writer in the clubhouse as being Michael Holley (the scribe Schilling espied had a similar long hair look the one Holley used to wear). After yelling across the clubhouse to who he thought was Holley, Shots informed Schill that it wasn’t actually the WEEI mid-day host. “Looks like him from here, though doesn’t it?” Yes, Ace, it does. And Holley will certainly be pleased to know how excited the Big Fella seemed to be to spot him.
. . . A group of players, including Schilling, attended Chapel services this morning.
. . . A Topps representative was on hand, doling out royalty checks to eligible players and dropping off stacks of cards for the players to grab. Schilling took a double-deck’s worth when he passed by the card shelf.
. . . Some apologies, corrections and salutations from our immediately prior post:
Tom Caron’s wife Kelley is not quite as sold on our “Super Dad” reference to TC as perhaps Caron’s young boys are. Kelley celebrated a birthday yesterday and TC was, of course, not at home to celebrate. Never a good thing to miss the wife’s birthday, but Shots is extending to belated birthday wisshes to Mrs. C and letting her know that her hubby was torn up about missing her special day.
Caron is also able to report that his strained oblique muscle resulted in son, Jack, notching a game-winning goal in his team’s season finale. Makes the pain all worth it, eh TC?
. . . We also have to apologize for spelling Clubhouse Dog, Brewzer’s name incorrectly all week long. The five-year-old Old English Bulldog goes with the non-traditional spelling. You’ll want to be sure to catch this week’s WBZ production of “Red Sox This Week,” hosted by Dan Roche (on TV38 and Channel 4 on Sunday evening). Brewzer has been set up with a lipstick cam on his broad shoulders and prodcuer Joe Giza is raving about the footage the big fella brought back in his first day on camera duties earlier this week. Camera man William Meservey (using his own personal lipstick cam) mounted the camera on top of some plastic tape holders and fastened the contraption to Brew’s collar.
Mike Timlin’s young son is also involved on the production side as he was in charge of carrying the dog’s paycheck (Iams large dog biscuits in the green box) around as Brew roamed the facility.
The dog belongs to Minor League complex equipment manager Mike Stelmach and came up through the Sox system about the same time as Jonathan Papelbon who is said to be a big fan of the four-legged cameradog. Brewzer has become a bit of celebrity around camp, ofetn being photographed, petted and generally fawned over.
Meservey told us that Brew is currently on break, showing the union rules do apply to the canine camera toters. He worked ten minutes and is now off for 30. “He gets tired,” said Meservey.
. . . Luis Tiant held court with a few reporters outside the clubhouse in the 9 a.m. hour and Tiant was simply terrific. Among other precious quotes, Tiant laid claim to having bestowed the nickname “Rooster” upon Rick Burleson. “He look like a rooster,” Tiant said.
Good enough reason for us.
. . . Julian Tavarez was once again lathering up with some God-awful smelling solution that he applies to his chest and shoulders with plastic gloves on his hands. The salve has aromatic elements of motor oil and burnt rubber. Drives the ladies crazy, we’re guessing.
. . . Schilling continues to drop his limited Japanese on just about every Japanese person he spots.
. . . Mike Timlin spoke at length with WBZ Radio’s living legend Johnny Miller about his sister Tracy Shach’s upcoming walk for ALS. Tracy will walk the 2,000 miles from Austin to Boston and wind up in time for the fourth annual Sharon Timlin Memorial Road Race on June 16 in Hopkinton.
. . . We’ll go and try track down some of Brewzer’s camera work as he roams the facility and we’ll check in with a post-workouts report later in the afternoon.
