Congratulations to the world’s first viral slam dunk champion, Boston Celtic, Gerald Green.
Green’s viral Reebok reel helped make the second-year Celt an early favorite to dethrone New York Knick Nate Robinson in Saturday night’s TNT-televised Dunk contest. The RBK video - complete with a mini-Elvis - even did a bit of foreshadowing as it showed Green preparing for his “Gerald Green Show” by working on his Dee Brown (1991 Slam Dunk Champion) imitation with a the so-called “peek-a-boo” arm-cover over the eyes.
We know exactly what Green was talking about when he told the Reebok employees at his “Going Away Party” on Tuesday to “Get your popcorn.” This was a show worth DVRing and re-watching.
Despite Dwight Howard’s sticker dunk (below), which was probably the most creative dunk of the night, it’s hard to argue with Green as the ‘07 champ. He took it seriously, he used props, he used pinache and Paul Pierce (as dunk cooridnator and designated tosser.
And yes, it’s the highlight of the Celtics 2006-07 season, without doubt.
And yes, also, Red Auerbach just rolled over at the mere thought of that. (Green, by the way, honored Auerbach with a No. 2 headband and said, “He was the heart, face and soul of the Boston Celtics, I went with the Number 2 to show him thanks.” Classy kid. Well played.)
Shots gives you a YouTube taste of how popcorn-worthy Green was in Vegas.

• More Gerald Green dunk videos can be found here.
• Dick Bavetta bled from his left knee after trying to dive across the midcourt line to beat Charles Barkley in their charity court run. The good news is that the Vegas Boys and Girls club got a $50,000 donation, or as Barkley called it, “Two hands of black jack.”
• Nice work by Celtics.com and Peter F. Stringer for some timely posting on the Green (or G-Squared or G-Money) win.
. . . And NBA.com has all sorts of video doo-dads and goo-gaws.
• Barkley - with his usual hoarse All-Star voice - was hysterical throughout (along with Kenny Smith), especially when Sir Charles said Michael Jordan, “done lost his mind,” because of the low scores he was giving out.
