The MetroWest Daily News is once again feeding the pipeline of NFL beat jobs as Albert Breer has accepted a job covering the Dallas Cowboys, on a shared beat, for the Dallas Morning News.
A Lincoln Sudbury (’98) and Ohio State graduate (’02), Breer, 27, will finish up his Boston beat run with Pats’ home opener against San Diego and is scheduled to join the DMN on September 24.
“I’m a very competitive person,” said Breer, who has been on the Patriots beat the past two years, sliding into the previous Mike Reiss slot. “I can’t imagine there’s a more competitive sports beat in the country than the Cowboys’.”
Reminded of the Yankees beat in NYC, Breer - as he’s done throughout his time in Foxboro - stood his ground. “It’s the NFL versus baseball,” he said. “But yeah, it’s close.”
The move, somewhat equivalent to a Double-A to the Majors leap, will put Breer in the third spot on the Cowboys’ beat behind fellow Mass.-native Todd Archer and Calvin Watkins (and the many Cowboy contributors) and means that his print readership will increase 20-fold (25,000 +/- to 500,000 +/-). It is expected that Breer will have presence both in-print and on-line, as all newspaper people are now assured of having. The position became open months ago when Matt Mosley bounced to ESPN.com. CORRECTION: We’re told the Mosley position - that of a blogger - was filled by the DMN’s Tim MacMahon. Breer’s spot actually comes from the paper’s college side, where two positions were open, but one went to adding to the Cowboys’ coverage, and thus the Breer hire. Bottom line? Breer’s on the Cowboy’s beat.
Breer follows in the ‘burb-to-metropolitan switches that have been recently executed by MetroWest guys Mike Reiss (to Boston Globe) and Tom Curran (to ProJo and now NBCsports.com) as well as the Eagle-Tribune duo of John Tomase and Rob Bradford (to the Herald).
“It was great to be able to call Mike, Tom, John and others to share the news with them,” said Breer. “They’ve all done so much for me.”
Fortunately, Breer will be able to see a lot of them again on the afternoon of October 14 when the Pats take on the ‘Boys for the 1st annual Albert Breer/Bill Parcells/Drew Bledsoe Cup Game.
We’ll have a bit more on the Breer move for Thursday morning, so come on back and join us for a full day of blogging fun, most of it from on or near Disney property. Whoooeeeeeeee!!!
