No movement to report on the Dennis & Callahan DisContinuation over at WEEI 850 AM. Entercom’s spokespeople at Regan Communications told Shots late Tuesday afternoon that “there is nothing new on the D&C situation. If that changes, we’ll let you know.” As of this post on Wednesday, no contact has been initiated by the beach walking jokesters at Regan.
Shots was, however, able to speak briefly with John Dennis before his early afternoon tee time on Wednesday and the locked out co-host vehemently denied that the week’s events are part of some publicity stunt.
“That’s absolute nonsense,” said Dennis. “There would be a real hot place in hell for anyone who uses the Jimmy Fund Radio Telethon as a negotiating ploy.”
Well said.
• Among the multitude of rumors that have sprouted around the potential free agency of D&C, Shots is able to reliably address the one that was erroneously floating about and suggesting the Red Sox-Entercom radio deal was voidable after one season at the club’s option.
Entercom’s spokespeople also told Shots “there is no opt-out clause” in the radio contract.
. . . There is, however, believed to be a local property available as the Bruins have yet to re-up with flagship WBZ 1030 AM.
Of course, to think that the Bruins could do much of anything for any local station’s stature would be to suggest that hockey is relevant in this town. And we all know that hasn’t been true for a good three years now.
UPDATE: 1:07 p.m. Thursday 08.16.07: WBZ’s Director of News & Programming Peter Casey has informed Shots that ‘BZ is the home for the Bs this coming season adding that he didn’t “have any specifics about the contractual status to release at this time.”
Casey promised to keep us posted.
. . . The D&C camp is floating around numbers that suggest the morning show accounts for the largest percentage of ‘EEI’s daytime (6 a.m. to 6 p.m.) ad inventory money and thus its hosts should be compensated as the station’s revenue-generating leaders. They’re also pointing to the Howie Carr numbers that have filtered into the local radio discussion in recent weeks.
But it’s probably prudent to note that the suits aren’t exactly in a good spot to be throwing around dumb money, which is what it might cost to retain the duo. As many friends have pointed out, Jason Wolfe is working under the constraints of a salary cap the same way Scott Pioli is.
That is by no means an excuse for Wolfe’s mishandling of this and other recent negotiations, but it is to acknowledge that Wolfe (and Julie Kahn) ultimately answers to the Big Man, David Field, the 2006 Radio Executive of the Year.
. . . D&C also need to understand that the numbers that a single entity like Carr can get are generally going to be higher than that paid out to a two-headed host combination.
. . . Shots will be a guest of NECN’s NewsNight tonight (Wednesday) in the 7 p.m. hour to discuss D&C/WEEI/Shock Jocks as well as the Don Imus situation. I will be joined on the guest-side of the table by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly reporter David Frank.
