With Dennis & Callahan reunited and the Entercom family living happily ever after (at least at WEEI 850 AM), there is still one piece of unfinished business resulting from the D&C saga:
Who was the “mystery wooer” that was supposedly ready to snatch up John Dennis and Gerry Callahan and start up an FM sports radio talk station (as soon as yesterday if they had landed the hosts) to take on ‘EEI?
Shots has been told by numerous city radio sources and those close to the talks that the pair’s pursuer was none other than Entercom rival (and Howie Carr snatcher) Greater Media, which was looking to launch with D&C on WBOS 92.9 FM. With confidentiality agreements forbidding the participants to comment on the discussions, we sent the following email to Great Media’s Director of Corporate Communication Heidi Raphael today:
There’s a lot of chatter in Boston as you may know regarding WBOS. It’s my understanding that they were in negotiations with Dennis and Callahan to bring them over and launch an all sports station (similar to the one Greater Media has in Philly).
Do you have any specifics on that? Is ‘BOS going to remain in its current format? Would Greater Media have interest in starting up an all-sports station in this market to compete with Entercom’s WEEI?
Raphael courteously and promptly responded with the following:
Regarding your Dennis and Callahan question:
“We are approached by talent and agents on a continuous basis, given the multi-market nature of our company. All of these conversations are confidential and we respect that confidentiality,” Raphael emailed.
Regarding launching an all-sports station:
“We deal in a business of attitudes. We constantly research all of the markets we operate in - always looking to improve our brands - be it country, rock, talk, etc. Like any good operator, we are always keeping an eye on each market to see where opportunities might arise. The market will make those decisions- not Greater Media,” she wrote.
We’ll let you read into those quotes as much or as little as you please and would remind of the recent unsettled nature of 92.9 where George Knight was shifted to mornings.
• Just a reminder that Shots is on the road the rest of the week, so our next regularly-scheduled edition of Scott’s Shots is slated for Friday, September 21. See you then and a happy and healthy L’Shana to all our fellow tribal members.
