MEMPHIS, Tenn. - One of the things you learn as you toil in the new world of journalism is that often times if you don’t self-promote then you won’t get promoted at all. While that may be a cynical way of looking at things, it’s also a simple truth.
With that in mind, Scott’s Shots takes great pride in relaying news that we are officially working on our first book project with former UMass coach, John Calipari. The contents of the release below have the specifics.
FREE PRESS TO PUBLISH NEW BOOK BY MEMPHIS HEAD BASKETBALL COACH JOHN CALIPARI
(New York, N.Y., March 12, 2008)—Free Press, an imprint of Simon and Schuster, Inc., announced today that it will publish in September 2009 a new book by University of Memphis head coach John Calipari, written with journalist David Scott. Free Press Vice President & Editorial Director Dominick V. Anfuso acquired world rights, audio, and first serial for the book, which will be titled BOUNCE BACK: Overcoming Setbacks to Thrive in Business and in Life, from literary agent David Black of the David Black Literary Agency.
Most of us remember Calipari from his very public firing from the head coaching position with the New Jersey Nets in 1999, just 20 games into his third season with the team. In the wake of this public embarrassment, Calipari made the decision to face this humbling experience head on, get his life back in order, and resurrect his career. BOUNCE BACK is a book for everyone who has experienced a setback like this in their lives. As Calipari asserts, this book gives him a chance to help people who are going through any type of life-altering event. “I want readers to know that they are not alone. People get fired every day. I can give guidance in negotiating those troubling times and so can the people I enlist to help me with this book.”
Now, Calipari, a successful motivational speaker, is back on top as the head coach of the University of Memphis Men’s Basketball team – a program into which he has instilled new life and that is currently ranked at the top of the NCAA and is a favorite to advance deep into the upcoming NCAA Tournament. In addition to Calipari’s first-hand, hands-on advice, the book will also include examples from prominent figures who have had to make a comeback, including Ken Blanchard and Larry Brown. BOUNCE BACK, in the tradition of national bestselling books like Pat Riley’s The Winner Within and Lou Holtz’s Wins, Losses, and Lessons, proves that succeeding has little to do with luck and everything to do with perseverance, hope, and staying positive.

3I can barely read a paragraph of your writing. I cannot imagine a book. I hope you learn to not to strive to be so clever before you write this book.

6J -
That’s the colloquial “we” and also is an indication that I’m simply the messenger who will deliver Cal’s advice for Bouncing Back.
Thanks for checking in and “we” hope you’ll buy the book when it comes out. . .

9Congrats. I’ve always enjoyed reading your media critiques. I’ll pass on the book. I hope Calipari runs a cleaner program at Memphis than UMass. If not, I’ll provide you with the title to your second book “Bounced by NCAA Sanctions”.
