While in journalism class at Syracuse, I recall an esteemed professional journalist turned professor discuss just what needs to be done in circumstances such as these, where a story was run without proper scrutiny. The old writer said simply and slowly, "The publication responsible needs to handle the aftermath and consequences in a manner that would satisfy even its worst enemy." As more and more media outlets "get the story wrong" the first time (can you say Judith Miller), I am reminded of his sage words, and disappointed that I have yet to find someone to live up to them.

At least Mr. Scott went so far as to include himself in the large list of "losers." It's only a small step in the right direction, but at least it's a start.

The Herald guys circling the wagons was really embarrassing. I thought Felger handled it okay but his side kick today was the worst (not even sure who it was).

Defenders keep saying they have ran with stories that didn't work out and nothing happened to them. Such a retarded argument because it doesn't take into account the magnitude of this story. It's a little different that reporting 'Colvin may be out on Sunday.'

The whole thing is just embarrassing.

Loser: Massarotti. He spent practically all of his time on WEEI today using his 'made for newspaper' voice giving us all a lesson on the difference between 'infer' and 'imply.' Basically, he exhausted himself (and listeners, too) trying to tell listeners and readers that they 'inferred' something different than he 'implied.' In truth, you don't get THAT kind of backlash unless the audience inferred EXACTLY what Massarotti 'implied.' Massarotti, in a roundabout sort of way, tried to tell everyone that they 'didn't get what he meant.'

If you talk about the Patriots being forever tainted, how about the whole print media business? How many Blairs, Tomases, Massarottis, and Borges do we need to suffer through before this whole thing sinks whatever lifeboat these guys are clinging to?
