He writes well, speaks well, and has as good a grasp on his subject matter (the Red Sox) as anyone. The respect Jeff has earned would also allow him to be a very versatile beat writer for the Celtics or Patriots, should he choose to do so, or even as a (GASP!!!) columnist. But it does seem that transiting the meridian from beat writer to columnist means trading in some of that hard-won respect. Jeff may like it just fine right where he is.
