I was at the beach last Friday listening to Lobel and Burton and was laughing my ass off. Entertainment - sports entertainment - comes in many different ways and Lobel's "I really don't care" attitude is refreshing.

Hell, most of the athletes don't really care that much either. They practice, they play, they go home. Winning, when it comes, is a team effort.

Lobel is, was, and continues to be a respected sports reporter. He has important connections that feed him tips of one kind or another. Maybe here he didn't work too hard to get a second source, but he did attribute it to Red Sox management.

Both the six figure fine and the disenchantment of the three pitch at bat were lumped to coming from the front office.

Take it for what it's worth.

Remember, "Believe only half of what you see and nothing that you hear."

Yes, but would Lobel accept a weekend gig...which is when the insufferable duo of Johnson & Mustard are on? Sometimes when you reach the rarefied air of a Lobel you have a limit to how low you will go to accept new work. But seeing as Lobel cut his teeth on Calling All Sports---a weekend show--he just might...if for no other reason than to get back to his roots.

while it was a low for lobel, how about boston.com running with the story as if it were news? having it on the front of their website prominently for all to see as a top story. let's not forget it was steve silva of boston dirtdogs who posted lobel's comments, and who has been posting ridiculous "news" about manny such as jaywalking incidents since. he has, and has always had, and agenda when it comes to the players he doesn't like, and that's fine when its one his own little website, but now that he is part of boston.com it should not be allowed.

Lobel is well connected and has better sources than most "journalists". You may recall that it was he who broke the story of CMGI backing out of the stadium deal, forcing Kraft to announce Gillette as his new partner before he intended to.

Like him or not, he is a member of the "good ol' boy network", and those ol' boys generally know what is going on. He may have gotten it wrong here or he may not have - maybe he was used by those same friends, maybe he got bad information or maybe he's part of a hatchet job engineered by someone in management.

Regardless, don't hold it against him that he parlayed marginal talent into some mega paydays and that he still wants in on the action. I listened Friday and found he and Burton to be more compelling than the usual fill ins du jour. (Although I like Felger much better now that he's back.)

If some anonymous blog came forward with the same theory, they would be ripped to shreds and the "mother's basement" jokes would be through the roof.

It was a 'low' for Lobel. In a shameless play to essentially remind people that he is, somehow, still relevant, Lobel went out--sans credentials--and acted the part of a journalist. His 'report' was no more a 'report' on a sports situation than I could give as a passive fan. I had very little respect for Lobel before this incident; I have even less now. I he were really valuable and relevant as a sports media personality, he'd have been scooped up long ago. It's really tough for these media 'gray hairs' to realize that their time is up (see: Chet Curtis, Jack Williams, Natalie Jacobson, et al). Just GO ALREADY!
